Citizens Property Insurance Corporation-Florida homeowner Insurance Customers Not Always Given All the Facts!

If you have your Florida home insurance with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation until recently, you might not have learned about private Florida homeowner insurance companies that were interested in taking your policy out of Citizens, sometimes for a lower annual premium.

Why?

An article written by Anika Myers Palm of the Orlando Sentinel dated March 13, 2008 – “Regulators to Citizens Property: Do Better Job of Notifying Policyholders” reported that some Florida insurance agents or agencies will not agree to the “take-outs” and policyholders don’t find out that they have an option to move to a private Florida home insurance company.

The article reports on an order passed by Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation that requires Citizens to notify their policyholders when a private, Florida homeowner insurance company is interested in assuming their policy.

Some of the private Florida homeowner insurance companies currently involved in taking policies out of Citizens Property Insurance Corporation include:

  • American Integrity Insurance Company
  • First Home Insurance Company
  • Landmark One Insurance Company
  • Florida Peninsula Insurance Company
  • HomeWise Preferred Insurance Company
  • Southern Oak Insurance Company
  • Northern Capital Insurance Company
  • Sunshine State Insurance Company
  • Argus Fire and Casualty Insurance Company

Of the companies listed above, only 4 of 9 are writing new homeowners insurance business in Florida. The other 5 companies are doing exclusively take-outs. If you are a Citizens Property Insurance Company policyholder, it is very important to end up with the right Florida take out insurance company.

You should look for two things in a potential Florida home insurance company that wants to take your policy out of Citizens:

  • A company with a decent size surplus and good financial ratings
  • A company that is writing new, voluntary business as well as doing Citizen takeouts.

The second item above is the most important because if a company is writing voluntary, new, Florida home insurance business, it is serious about growing its policyholder base and diversifying its risk across the state. More importantly, Florida insurance companies that are doing this are less likely to take your policy out of Citizens this year, and put your back in Citizens next year!

Allstate Offer to State of Florida-Settlement or Bribe?

Allstate is in the news again as the Florida homeowner insurance crisis continues.

Tom Zucco of the St. Petersburg Times reported on April 24, 2008 in an article entitled “Crist: Allstate offered state millions to resolve dispute about a multi-million dollar offer Allstate recently made to the State of Florida.

Governor Charlie Crist, representatives of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, and even Allstate Insurance Agents are all mentioned in the article as confirming that a multi-million dollar settlement offer was made by the company – Allstate officials are quoted as saying that no offer had been made.

Where does all of this leave the Florida homeowner insurance consumer?

If this settlement offer was in fact made by Allstate it should be viewed as a bribe designed to influence the negotiations currently going on between the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation and Allstate.

Let’s remember where we came from.

During 2007, the State of Florida passed legislation about homeowners insurance in Florida that offered insurance companies a lower cost for insurance by expanding the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. Most Florida insurance companies responded with rate reductions in the 12-14% range.

Allstate still went for broke and asked for an increase in excess of 40 percent! By asking for a massive increase when they were supposed to be reducing Florida home insurance rates, Allstate brought all of this rate and document scrutiny upon itself.

Most Floridians should be outraged if it turns out that right in the middle of this dispute, Allstate tried to make the whole thing go away with a cash settlement that looks an awful lot like a bribe.

If you are fed up with waiting for the State of Florida
